Participant Provided (Required) Equipment:

Overview

Each athlete is responsible for personal equipment and items. Shooting ranges or coaches are not responsible for a student athlete’s personal items.

Equipment Inspections

Any team coach or RSO has the right to examine any item of an athlete’s equipment including guns, ammunition, clothing, and other equipment to ensure proper accordance with these Policies & Procedures.

Shotgun

Student-athletes are required to supply their own shotgun.

All types of smooth-bore shotguns, including semi-automatics, may be used provided their caliber does not exceed 12 gauge (20 gauge is acceptable).

The student-athlete cannot use a shotgun that:

Has any form of “release” trigger actions.

Has a sling or strap attached.

Changes a properly functioning firearm in the same round.

Use attached devices that have magnifying or light-emitting effects.

Has a pistol grip that does not have a stock.

Has a mechanical hammer used for “cocking”.

Utilizes a detachable magazine.

Has a barrel length of less than 24”.

Is designed or intended for home defense or tactical purposes.

Should an issue arise with the proper functioning and safety of a participant’s gun, the team will require that a different gun be used until the issue has been addressed by a competent gunsmith with documentation provided on the issue(s) found and corrective measures taken.

Shell Catcher

All semi-automatic shotguns must be equipped with a shell catcher – No exceptions.  This can be a commercially available shell catcher that is compatible with the gun or can be as simple as a rubber band situated over the ejection port of the gun that prevents the shell from ejecting.  All shell catchers must be in working order while participating.  If a rubberband is used, the athlete must have spares available should the rubber band break and be replaced immediately.

Shell Pouch

The Team will supply for purchase all new members with the specific team Shell Pouch to hold shells and the spent hulls that the athlete is expected to catch and control. The Shell Pouch is considered part of the uniform and must also be used at all team practices and competitions.  If an athlete loses or their shell pouch is not functional, it is their responsibility to replace it with the same team pouch.

SKB Compact Hip Bag (SKB Item # CHB) – Holds 1 box of shells, compact mesh bag that holds 50 empty hulls, loops for 2 spare shells, and a zipper compartment for personal protective gear, MSRP $29.95 (available to purchase from the team for $15).

Eye and Ear Protection

Personal protective equipment is the responsibility of the participant. All shooters will provide eye and ear protection that meets minimum safety requirements:

Eye protection designed specifically for shooting sports is required for each student-athlete to use while on the field during all events.

Prescription glasses can be used for eye protection if the lenses are comprised of plastic or polycarbonate.

Hearing protection devices designed specifically for shooting sports are required for each student-athlete to use while on the field during all events. All devices should have a Noise Reduction Rating (NNR) of 27dB or higher.

Hearing protection devices that allow for playing music are allowed as long as range commands are audible.

Standard commercial earbuds, headphones, or Bluetooth audio playback devices are not designed to reduce and/or eliminate gunshot noise and are not approved for hearing protection.
